1. Cultural Diversity + Vibrancy Score

Digital nomads have the flexibility to work from virtually anywhere on the globe. Choosing an ideal destination often boils down to unique cultural attractions. While coffee shops and internet are global, Mexico City’s rich culture sets it apart.

Mexico City, known for its rich culture, beckons digital nomads with a unique and budget-friendly experience. Discover its allure here. Be welcomed by warm-hearted locals, bask in a near-perfect climate, and savor the huge flavors of authentic Mexican cuisine.

teotihuacan pyramids

Mexico City itself is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its cultural and historical significance. Its a city built on ruins and you can check some of these out right in the middle of downtown called El Templo Mayor. About an hour from downtown Mexico City you can visit one of the most massively epic pyramids in the world called Teotihuacan with a massive Pyramid of the Sun, a Pyramid of the Moon, and other impressive ruins.

Take a break from remote working and invest some time in visiting a museum like el Palacio de Bellas Artes, The Anthropological Museum, talk a walk through one of many green spaces located in the city, or visit one of only a handful of castles in Mexico in Chapultepec Castle. Fun fact, Chapultepec Castle actually housed an Emperor and Empress in the 1800’s and served as residence for Mexican presidents.

2. Co-Working Spaces

In the world of a digital nomad in Mexico, finding the perfect workspace is a top priority, and Mexico City excels in this regard. You’ll find a bustling collection of Coworking spaces that cater to various work styles and preferences.

Discover over 18 coworking spaces, numerous coffee shops, and countless libraries on the west side—a plethora of options for work-friendly environments.

WeWork has 15 locations in Mexico City with average monthly price of $175 to $210 per month. This depends entirely on your personal needs and I know some digital nomads in Mexico are able to work from a coffee shop with decent WIFI speeds. Lastly, use trial and error to find the best coffee shop that fits your vibe.

Located in trendy neighborhoods like Roma and Polanco, these Coworking spots offer much more than just a desk and chair. With fast internet, comfortable workstations, and even meeting rooms, they’ve got you covered.

Some spots even boast rooftop terraces with stunning city views, making them perfect for both productivity and relaxation. As you navigate your digital nomad journey in Mexico City, you’ll quickly discover that your workspace options are as diverse and inspiring as the city itself.

3. Low cost of living for a world destination

Considering Mexico for your next destination? Undoubtedly, its cost of living is a cherry on top, offering affordability and quality compared to Paris, Rome, or NYC. No other world destination is as affordable as Mexico City, not even close.

Unlike other world class cities you’ll find reasonably priced accommodation options in some of the trendiest neighborhoods in Mexico City. Choose trendy or budget-friendly areas; monthly furnished stays range from $400 to $2-3k for larger places with added amenities.

From street food to expensive sit-down experiences, dining out is always an experience here. Digital nomads will find a wide list of eateries offering delicious Mexican food that won’t break the bank. What’s funny, but compared to food in the US food in Mexico just has more flavor. Another funny thing is supermarkets in the US are full of perfect looking fruits and veggies that can taste like nothing but cardboard. While, I’ve enjoyed mind-blowingly delicious flavors from imperfect looking fruit in open-air markets in Mexico with flies all over it.

Moreover, public transportation is both accessible and cost-effective, allowing you to explore this vibrant city without straining your budget. The subway, which is called “El Metro“, costs 5 pesos per journey and a reloadable card will cost you just 10 pesos.

Unquestionably, digital nomdas must experience Mexico City’s vibrant culture and affordable living as this makes it an ideal place for work-life balance.

4. World destination for high quality food

Mexican food, if you ask me Mexican food should be named as a UNESCO cultural world heritage due its unique and delicious flavors. In fact, Mexican food actually “is” considered a UNESCO cultural world heritage of humanity and was done so in 2010. Rightly so as it is one of the most recognizable cuisines in the world. The taco is right up there with Italian pizza, French bread, Middle-Eastern kabobs, and Indian curries as one of the most recognizable and loved foods in the world.

World destinations are known for their strong culinary identity and Mexico City sits at the top of this list also. In any case, this also makes it a top world destination!

Mexico City boasts affordable and amazing Mexican cuisine, ranking among the world’s top cities for trendy dining. Explore Polanco, Roma Norte, Juarez, and La Condesa neighborhoods for diverse, trendy restaurants catering to various budgets. However, anticipate higher costs at sought-after venues compared to equally delicious street food.

One day I’ll write an entire post on tacos al pastor but for now just know that after they invented al pastor tacos they could’ve stopped inventing any other types of tacos, you just don’t mess with something so perfect and nothing will ever top it. There, I said it lol.

Of course, you should try are an avocado pizza from Huset in Roma Norte, a saliva inducing guava roll from Panaderia Rosetta also in Roma Norte, or an enticing duck taco from El Autentico Taco Manila. Or, ahem, you could subside strictly on al pastor tacos for breakfast lunch and dinner, and the occasional al pastor taco snack for those trying hunger times. Just kidding, or am I?

5. Digital Nomad Community

As if the culturally rich environment, cheap cost of living, Coworking spaces, and amazing food weren’t enough, Mexico City has a thriving digital nomad community to welcome you with open arms. Furthermore, it’s like moving to a city with a family already waiting for you. A strong digital nomad community is key for any city wanting to be on the list of top world destinations. Mexico City achieves this!

Consider Mexico City as a base for digital nomads; it hosts a vibrant and growing community for remote work. Finally, as its appeal increases, other countries may seem less attractive.

Engage in meetups, workshops, and co-working events to connect with remote professionals. Alternatively, chat with fellow expats in diverse settings.

Beyond just work, this community explores the city’s cultural and social offerings together. It also provides an opportunity to form genuine connections and friendships.

Also, whether you’re seeking advice on the co-working spaces or the best cafe’s, the digital nomad community can help. Lastly, with the city’s ever-expanding appeal, you can count on a welcoming and inclusive environment that enhances your digital nomad journey.

6. Safety and Precautions

Mexico City and its surroundings has almost 22 million people which makes it an exciting and vibrant city with tons of options for absolutely anything you can imagine. Unfortunately, this also creates many opportunities for those looking to do something illegal. In this regard, petty theft, pickpockets, and scammers are something to watch out for.

I have a saying, the bigger the city the higher you have to turn up your internal danger awareness. That being said, when it comes to being a digital nomad in Mexico city, safety is a top priority. Suffice it to say, Mexico City has made significant strides in ensuring the well-being of its residents and visitors.

While the city has its share of concerns, following some basic precautions can go a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Therefore, stick to well-lit areas. Lastly, use reputable transportation services, and be mindful of your belongings in crowded places.

Be aware of earthquake procedures and ask locals about what they do to stay safe during an earthquake. Also, do no sit at an outside restaurant with something valuable sitting on the table, if possible loop your backpack straps through the chair legs, and put your wallet in your front pocket with a zipper if possible.

Additionally, staying informed about local safety recommendations and connecting with the digital nomad community for tips and insights can further enhance your security. By taking these precautions, you can make the most of your digital nomad journey in Mexico City while enjoying peace of mind.

7. Local Getaway Opportunities Within This World Destination

Mexico City is blessed with so many different places to visit an hour or two hours away!

1 to 2 hours away – Teotihuacan Pyramids, Xochimilco, Ajusco National Park, Cuernavaca, and Toluca.

These are more for long weekend trips where you can expect to spend at least a couple of days at a hotel and exploring all the area has to offer. To summarize, please visit all of the Pueblo Magico’s near Mexico City!

8. Mexican Mega Projects

Mexico is undergoing a transformative phase investing heavily in infrastructure projects that are reshaping the nation’s connectivity. Make no mistake, the crown jewel of recent infrastructure projects is the Mayan Train, a visionary project set to enhance transportation and promote tourism in the Yucatan Peninsula. This, in addition to other projects, make Mexico City a top world destination.

The Mayan Train

No doubt that the crown jewel of the recent barrage of mega projects that Mexico has been working on is The Mayan Train. The Mayan Train is a 1500 kilometer (yes kilometers, the other unit of measure the majority of the world uses lol) train being built in Southeastern Mexico that will run through and connect Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Campeche, Tabasco, and Chiapas. This project will connect some of the most important tourism and archeological sites in all of Mexico. Of course, Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum as the obvious ones. Whereas, the not so obvious ones are places like Bacalar, Merida, and Palenque.

Interurban Train Mexico City–Toluca

In addition to the Mayan Train, the Toluca-Mexico City train project is streamlining commuting between these two major urban centers. As the country invests in these vital initiatives, it’s not only improving domestic travel but also bolstering Mexico’s allure as a destination for digital nomads.

These developments highlight Mexico’s commitment to progress and accessibility, making it an exciting time to explore Mexico’s dynamic landscape. These projects and more to come are what are showcasing the true progress Mexico is currently experiencing.

Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec

The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico is an economically and socially transformative project aimed at enhancing connectivity between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. This train will benefit people by creating new economic opportunities through improved trade routes. The enhanced connectivity will lead to increased employment, stimulate local economies, and facilitate more efficient transportation of goods, ultimately contributing to regional development and prosperity.
