Why Mexico?

With the constant global shifts in safety, security and political instability Mexico has maintained a relatively sustainable quality of living. Of course, Mexico has always been a tourist destination as it is known worldwide for its beaches, food, and premier cuisine. Now, Mexico has transformed into one of the top digital nomad destinations due to its lower cost of living and better overall environment when compared to other countries that seem to be on the decline.

  • Fast internet speeds
  • Tax payments of 0 to 30%
  • Several Visa options
  • Great weather throughout
  • Low cost of living
  • Low cost of accommodations
  • Better quality food
  • Modern transportation
  • Rich culture + Happy people

Mexico is rising as other countries as falling behind in every respect. Its infrastructure has finally caught up to the rest of the living and living there just makes sense. Why live someplace else and vacation in Mexico when you can just live there full-time?

II: Understanding Mexican Visa Options

Tourist Mexican Visa

Typically known as the FMM card, the tourist visa is a requirement for any foreign national entering Mexico more than 20 km and longer than 3 days. You can stay in Mexico for up to 180 days with this and the amount of time depends on the immigration officer. You can generally work for a foreign employer and work from Mexico without having to report taxes.

Allow me to highlight that I am not an immigration or legal expert. But if you would like to avoid trouble, I recommend depositing your foreign generated funds to a bank of your country of origin. Meaning that as long as you are not working for a Mexican company and earning pesos you are usually okay living in Mexico on the FMM card.

Your Options at the End of the 180 Days Are:

  • Make a border run to the U.S., Belize, or Guatemala and re-enter Mexico with new 180 day Mexican visa
  • Stay in another country for a month or two
  • Fly back to Mexico and hopefully obtain a new 180 day Mexican visa upon re-entry – not guaranteed
  • Overstay your visa – Not recommended unless you have no other option

Honestly, the hardest part of this scenario is finding a foreign company that will allow you to live abroad while working for them.

III: Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining a Mexican Visa

Obviously, starting your digital nomad journey in Mexico begins with the meticulous gathering of your essential documents. Obviously, this list applies for both temporary Mexican visa and permanent Mexican visa only since the FMM visa can be obtained by simply entering the country as a tourist.

To ensure a smooth visa application process, make sure you have the following documents at your fingertips:

Required Documents for Visa Applications

  • Passport: A valid passport with at least six months of validity beyond your planned stay in Mexico.
  • Visa Application Form: Duly filled and signed application form, which you can obtain from the official website of the Mexican embassy or consulate. Follow this link for visa form downloads.
  • Passport-sized Photos: Recent passport-sized photographs meeting the specifications outlined by the Mexican immigration authorities. For photo specifications, click here.

Tips on Gathering and Organizing Paperwork

Honestly, gathering all the paperwork can seem daunting, and honestly, it really is. I personally get nervous having to prepare all of my documents while making sure everything is valid and up to date. So, I feel you. Therefore, here are some things that helped me through this process.

  • Make a Checklist: Develop a detailed checklist based on the specific visa category you’re applying for. Check off items as they get completed to avoid confusion about what is left.
  • Start Early: I recommend starting the document preparation process as soon as you decide to pursue this option. The better prepared you are ahead of time the more you can focus on other parts of your move.
  • Digital Copies: Scan and save digital copies of all your documents. This ensures you have backups in case of loss or emergency. Also, a good idea is to encrypt these items and email them to yourself.
  • Consult the Embassy/Consulate: When in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact the Mexican embassy or consulate for clarifications on document requirements.

By the way, by staying meticulous in your documentation, you’ll be well-prepared to begin the exciting next stage of your digital nomad adventure in Mexico!
